Winning Wine Cocktails

The next time you want to enjoy your favorite varietal, consider reaching for a cocktail menu instead of the wine list. Wine, port, sherry and other grape-based options are appearing as ingredients in high-end cocktails. Here are five wine cocktails to sample at home.

 
  • Chancellor Cocktail
    2 oz Scotch
    1 oz Port
    .5 oz sweet vermouth
    2 dashes Angostura Bitters

  • Arcade Cocktail
    1 oz Blanco tequila
    .75 oz grapefruit juice
    .25 oz simple syrup
    2 dashes Peychaud Bitters
    4 oz Champagne or sparkling wine

  • Grapefruit Grigio
    1 bottle of Pinot Grigio
    1/2 cup floral gin such as Hendricks or Nolet’s (or a citrus vodka, if you prefer)
    1/2 cup citrus vodka
    1/2 cup ruby red grapefruit juice (squeezed and strained)
    1 whole grapefruit, cut into 1/8 wheels
    Soda water, to taste
    Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher. Stir well and serve immediately over ice. Add soda water to taste.

  • Black Cherry Sangria
    1 bottle fruity red wine (i.e. Zinfandel)
    1 cup Ocean Spray Cran-Cherry juice
    1 cup black cherries, pitted and cut in half
    1/2 cup Grand Marnier
    Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher and stir well. Refrigerate for at least a few hours before serving.

  • Watermelon Sangria
    1 bottle Sauvignon Blanc
    1 cup watermelon juice (use a juice extractor)
    1/2 cup white grape juice
    2 cups of watermelon balls
    2 limes, cut into half wheels
    1/2 oz lime juice
    Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher and stir well. Serve immediately.
