Washington Wine Month Stop #14: Flying Dreams Winery

The 14th stop on our Washington Winery tour is all about passion and achieving your dreams.

With a specific taste for Spanish wines, Flying Dreams Winery looks to make its way to your cellar.

About the Winery:

“The name Flying Dreams originated with the idea that in life we must take chances if we are to fulfill our deepest passions. “Leap and Find Your Wings on the Way Down” embodies this concept and has become our mantra in the pursuit of creating the finest and most interesting ultra-premium wines found anywhere.”

About the Vineyards:

Extraordinary wines are made with care in the winery, but it is said that they begin in the vineyard – and Flying Dreams wholeheartedly believes this notion.

In 2007 Flying Dreams Winery began establishing relationships with some of the best grape growers in Washington State. Stillwater Creek Vineyard on the Royal Slope, Bouchey Vineyard in the Yakima Valley and Stone Tree Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope are among those prestigious vineyards with whom they have had the good fortune to procure our particular grape varieties.

Since starting the winery they have also nurtured partnerships with other growers whose particular sites are ideal for the varietals they have chosen to work with. Those include Red Willow Vineyard (Marcoux), Upland Estates Vineyard, Sagemore (Weinbau), Spring Creek Vineyards, Vinagium (Red Haven) on Red Mountain and Olsen Estates Vineyard.

About the Winemaker:

“The freedom to dare, to explore and to be passionately curious. Becoming a winemaker is the realization of this guiding principle and each wine is a pathway toward some new discovery.” – Leroy Radford, winemaker

Passionate about winemaking since his first vintage in 2005, Leroy consistently strives to deepen his understanding of what it takes to make sublime wines of uniqueness and character. With a commitment to exploring Spanish varietals and Spanish-style blends, his focus is on the Iberian trinity: Tempranillo, Garnacha and Monastrell.

These three varietals, which happen to ripen perfectly in Washington, form the base for the most highly prized wines on the Iberian Peninsula and when blended with small percentages of Washington’s finest Bordeaux such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec you can understand why. In a word, stunning!

About the Wines:

Spainish-style wines are still relatively unknown to Washington wine drinkers, but they are clearly emerging as the next big wave of great Washington wines. Flying Dreams looks forward to sharing them with you.
