McGuigan Wins International Semillon Trophy for Third Year in a Row
Award-winning Australian wine producer, McGuigan Wines, has picked up the International Semillon Trophy for its Bin 9000 Hunter Valley Semillon 2005 at the International Wine Challenge. This is the third time that McGuigan Wines has won the title of ‘World’s Best Semillon’ in the UK in the past three years.
The Bin 9000 Hunter Valley Semillon 2005 (currently available via the cellar door for $65 per bottle) was the only Australian wine to win an international trophy, with the wine also receiving the coveted Australian White Wine Trophy – commonly referred to as ‘the best Australian white wine of show’. The trophy covers all white varieties produced in Australia from delicate Riesling to richer full bodied Chardonnay and Viognier, and all styles in between. Rounding out the trifecta, the wine was also awarded the Hunter Valley Semillon Trophy.
McGuigan Wines chief winemaker, Neil McGuigan, is delighted by this recognition: “To have Hunter Valley Semillon be crowned the world’s best is a great testament to the uniqueness of the region, and the ageing characteristic of the variety. To have won the title of ‘world’s best Semillon’ for a third time is a remarkable achievement.”
McGuigan adds, “Hunter Valley Semillon is world renowned – lively and vibrant in its youth; complex and rich as it ages. Naturally low in alcohol, with length and depth, it’s an unrivalled grape variety. Just two weeks ago in London we held a ’10 years of Semillon’ tasting – the response was overwhelming. The Bin 9000 Semillons have had a stellar performance of recent times, with vintages from 2004 through 2007 all winning international trophies. We believe the variety definitely has a role to play within our portfolio in the UK and beyond.”
Crowned White Winemaker of the Year by the IWC in 2009 and again in 2012, the 2013 IWC challenge saw McGuigan Wines receive 4 Gold, 10 Silver and 10 Bronze medals across the competition. The Decanter World Wine Awards also recognised McGuigan Wines this week, awarding them 2 Gold, 9 Silver and 13 Bronze medals. Leading the charge was the Bin 9000 Hunter Valley Semillon 2007 which in addition to being awarded gold, received the Australian Single Varietal White Wine Trophy.
Neil McGuigan, has recently announced that award-winning aged vintages from the Bin 9000 Semillon series will soon be available in selected UK independent wine merchants.
